Making lime mortar look old

When we had some lime pointing done on the main house, soot from the chimneys was applied to the surface. This gives a similar appearance of age discolouration. The Vicarage was built in 1869. In other areas, we have left the lime in its new state, to age naturally. After all, it looks more natural to see some modernisation and repair has taken place.

In the stable block we have opted for an easier solution, theatrical colouring from Brodie and Middleton of Shaftesbury Avenue. The good news, you can order it from Travis Perkins, under the name Bostik Cementone. You don’t need to add much to your mix. As with the house, we are not applying everywhere only where it is aesthetically pleasing.
