The original ridge tiles were saved and reused on the main roof of the stable block. All of the old lime mortar was cleaned off and a modern dry ridge was used to fix them back.

When the main house had been repaired a lot of the ridge tiles were taken down. As these had dog tooth inserts cemented into them, many were broken on removal. What was salvaged was enough to do the boiler house, the well and now both of the dormers. Of course they are not new and you need to cut them with an angle grinder to the size required. The other solution was to use them as hardcore and buy new!

The ridges on the dormers were a different challenge. Namely, the smaller dormer was original, the larger dormer is new and has been built where the old hayloft door was. The smaller dormer had been repaired at some time and had mismatched ridge tiles. Therefore, the option was either to trawl the reclamation yards or recycle those on site.

The slates were also taken off the roof, saved and fixed with copper nails. The roof is now fully rot treated and a damp proof membrane added. Hopefully, it will serve another one hundred and fifty years.
