Lifting the dahlias for the winter

At the side of the front pathway is a rather nice purple double dahlia in purple with with white petal tips (dahlia Edinburgh). This did very well this year and has continued flowering into November. Although I was waiting for the first frost, the weather has been getting steadily colder. However, the amount or rain lately has dictated it needed lifting now, rather than risk the tubers rotting. You’ll see how well it did by the volume of foliage and flowers in the wheelbarrow.

To make sure that there was no rot, I gave it a quick hosing down and then once dry, stored in a green grocers tray with ventilation holes for the winter in the shed.
