Planting foxgloves and mulching

Christmas was mild and I was behind with the gardening tasks, I took the opportunity to plant lots of plants (foxgloves, campion roses, poppies, wallflowers, sweet williams etc.) that I had grown very late in the season. With no greenhouse or cold-frames, the best place is the ground.

At this time of year, I always plant more than would normally be required and closer than normal. Other than the cold, there are several peacocks in the area that just love to peck off anything that takes their fancy. Out of the two hundred wall flowers, I might achieve, twenty, by the time they have finished dining on them. They also like picking the flowers off, I have managed one cyclamen flower this year.
