Autumn Job – Planting Spring Bulbs

At the Saturday market in Bury St Edmunds, there are a couple of stalls selling plant and bulbs. I’ve never had much success with tulips, other than in pots, so thought it was best to give some of the daffodils a go. I have lots of dead (lawned) corners in the garden, by the paths around the house, which are too small to plant up and also allow access for the wheelbarrow, so need to be kept as grass. Another good thing is that they are close to the house, so allow viewing from the house or paved paths in the spring. I hope the bulbs will naturalise and spread over the coming years.

I bought a small bulb planter which fell to bits after planting the first half a dozen bulbs, so reverted back to the trusty spade to lift the turf and pop the bulbs under. I also found it a lot quicker, and made just a little bit more mess. Perhaps an investment in a more robust long-handled bulb planter for next year. My usual rule of thumb on bulbs, plant twice as deep as the bulb.
