Potting on the Winter sowing of Broad Beans

This year’s experiment is to see if the broad beans (The Sutton, Dwarf) that were sown on the 26th of October, will make an early crop in the coming months, or succumb!

Not having a greenhouse or cold frame, they were sown in the unheated stable block. They germinated quickly, but I didn’t notice them for several days, at which point I moved them to a window position. Today, I potted them on, as the roots were through the bottom of the pots and plunged them a bit deeper in the larger pots, up to the first leaves. It works with tomatoes, they grow additional roots on the buried stem. Thought I would see if these do the same.

At the same time, I pinched out the tips of the sweet peas. They were sown at the same time and had about four sets of leaves. Hopefully, it will stop them getting too leggy.

The sweet peas (Old Fashioned, Annual) that I sowed in the 26th October. Like the Broad Beans, They must have been growing for a week before I went in the stable block and moved them to a window sill. I’ve nipped out the growing points, we’ll see how they do.
