Planting potatoes at Easter

The first earlies (Rocket) and second earlies (Wilja) and also the main crop (Cara) were planted over the Easter weekend as well as the Garlic that had been growing on in pots and broad beans. This year, I chose to only sow a small bags of potatoes from the DIY store of each type. about seven tubers of each type. So just enough for half a row (the vegetable bed is the width of a scaffold board). The first and second earlies have been stood in the stable in egg boxes chitting for the last three or so weeks. I prefer to dig a trench and plant them in the bottom of that and then fill the trench gradually as they sprout from that.

On the top of the bamboo canes you’ll notice that I place the corks from bottles of wine/champagne. I just put them in the vice on the workbench and drill a hole into the cork and then force the bamboo cane into the hole . Its good for both eye protection and also if you just want to throw netting over.

On the other half of the rows, I planted the garlic and also the broad beans (the Sutton, Dwarf) that I sowed last autumn and also the ones I sowed a few few weeks ago.

After everything was planted they were watered in.

One of the evening jobs, especially when the weather is windy, is continuing the sowing of some vegetable and flower seeds in the old stable block.
